Ahlul Bayt News Agency ; Florida Pastor Terry Jones is in New York City and has called off plans to burn copies of the Koran. He said his church will never burn it, even if the Islamic cultural center is built near ground zero, Jones was warned the burning could put U.S. troops at risk. Right now tensions are high overseas regarding the issue.
In response to Pastor Jones' plan to burn copies of the Koran, a local church decided to hold a prayer in hopes it would never happen or be brought up again.
Members of Court Street United Methodist in downtown Rockford decided a few days ago to hold the prayer. When Jones announced he would cancel the burning indefinitely, the group decided the prayer was still necessary just in case others supported Jones’ plan. About 20 people came out to the church. Some members said the prayer is important because it shows support for different beliefs in our area.
“We chose to respond in positive peaceful way. So all folks of all nationalities and all faiths know that we support them no matter what they believe - no matter what we believe that peace is powerful and so is prayer," Church member, Betsy Lovelady-Smith said.
Members of the Muslim Community Center were also there to read verses of the Koran and explain their meanings.
